Pitch Black: Darkness enshrouds the Mega Series

With the release of Pitch Black on July 17, 2026, the Pokémon Trading Card Game is getting darker. This new 120-card expansion is the Western-language counterpart to the Japanese set Abyss Eye, previously released in May 2026. Just like its blueprint, Pitch Black is part of the Mega Series and focuses on Pokémon and events seen in the Mega Dimension DLC of the Generation IX video game Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which has already inspired several other entries in the Mega Series. Specifically, the DLC, released in December 2025, follows the adventures of Team MZ having to deal with the spatial distortions created after the deactivation of Hyperrogue Ange Floette and the rebuilding of Lumiose City. In Pitch Black, both the city lights and the stars in the skies above Lumiose are obscured by the rise of Mega Darkrai ex. The sinister Pokémon is indeed the signature card of Pitch Black and, as such, it's allowed to take over the set's single Mega Hyper Rare slot with its usual gold-etched alternate artwork. However, it is the Special Illustration Rare created by the acclaimed artist Akira Egawa the version that best embodies Mega Darkrai ex's unsettling, nightmarish look. This version is, unsurprisingly, the set's most valued card on the secondary market. As usual, Mega Darkrai ex's main attack shares its name with the title of the original Japanese set, being called "Abyss Eye".

Another Darkness Pokémon accepts the challenge and faces Mega Darkrai: Morpeko ex might be a much smaller fighter, but when it enters its Hangry Mode, it becomes as scary as they get! The set also features a number of notable Psychic Energy Pokémon like Mega Chandelure ex, which fits the general eerie theme of Pitch Black, as well as the similarly ghostly Dhelmise and the less spooky Slowbro. Dhelmise is a peculiar Pokémon born from a piece of seaweed that merged with the debris of a sunken ship. Its Vengeful Anchor attack benefits from having four or more Pokémon with the Hide 'n' Sneak ability. Slowbro is a hermit crab Pokémon, and becomes more effective when we have no cards in hand. All of these Pokémon come with Special Illustration Rare versions featuring particularly striking alternate art.

Additionally, Pitch Black celebrates the rival character Gladion and his trusty Pokémon Silvally. The black-clad enforcer for Team Skull is captured in the aptly-named Supporter card Gladion's Final Battle, which boosts the attacks of Pokémon that don't have a rule box.
